Scrabble Charades

Saturday evening, Sara and I were starting to play Scrabble when Noah decided he wanted to help me. He drew my first batch of letters, arranged them on my tray, and advised me on words to play (he was disappointed that I had an N and an O but no A or H, as well as the fact that proper names aren’t allowed).

While I played my first word, inert, Noah just happened to be standing in a strangely stiff pose. He asked what my word meant. I told him, “It means not moving. Like you, right now. You’re not moving, so you’re inert.”

As all of this was happening, Sara and Rose were in the middle of their own conversation. Here’s what happened when Sara returned to the game.

Sara: Inert. That’s a good word. Noah, do you know what that means?

Noah doesn’t respond. Instead, he adopts a stiff, statue-like pose.

Sara: Why are you standing like that?

Me: He’s being inert.

Noah nods. The grownups laugh.
